I suspect that the reason the iPhone doesn't have a maps API is due to licensing constraints. Its not really in Google or Nokia's (who own most of the map data used by Google) interest to make the iPhone more appealing than it is already. My company, CloudMade does have a maps API which can be used with the iPhone - http://cloudmade.com/products/mobile-tiles. Check it out and please get in touch if you have any comments. Hello.
