You can get the best view into Pocket Journey by going to our main website. A summary from that site is posted below but may be out-of-date.
Our Vision
We’re not out of stealth mode so we can’t tell you everything, but in brief Pocket Journey is an “online travel community supporting micro-publishing of high quality location-aware content.” Let’s break that down in real terms because “online travel community” is perhaps obvious but what about the rest?
Pocket Journey will connect your location to the voices (audio & video files) of a community of thousands of historians, artists, architects, comedians, and others so you can quickly know everything about anywhere. If you have something to share about our world, then you will soon be able to upload audio or video to Pocket Journey. If you’re visiting a new city, wanting to know your own better, or perhaps hiking through a national park, then you will soon be able to download what others have to share.
Sharing Knowledge Through Community
As you can imagine, gathering all this knowledge together will create a new challenge: information overload. The available audio journeys will range from historical, political, cultural, haunted, comedic, or whatever topic you can imagine. With such a wide selection, it will become challenging to find the audio that most interests you unless the audio is properly prioritized, rated, and reviewed. Pocket Journey will use our proprietary information analytics in combination with the power of participation to sift through the world’s data & uncover the results right for you. Pocket Journey provides community interaction and audio reviewing capabilities to allow everyone to share information about their audio experiences so audio guides can better tailor their offerings and so the community can self-categorize and prioritize all the uploaded audio content. You’ll be able to read about other’s experiences with the journeys they’ve taken and to write reviews of journeys you’ve listened to as well.
Location-Aware Content? What is it?
At this early stage in the merging of online content with geo-spatial coordinates, a consensus has not developed around what exactly is “location-aware content”. We probably never will have consensus either just as “Web 2.0″ has no precise defintion because no description could fully capture the new online relationships and tools that have emerged from the early consumerization of the Internet. In the case of Pocket Journey though, “location-aware content” will be information (captured as audio, video, PDF, … files) that is associated with & describe a particular GPS location. That location might be a building, statue, point of historic importance (battlefield, asteroid impact, …), or even a tree or geologic formation – essentially any location on the planet that people want to create and attached content to.
Location-aware content (LAC) is in the embryonic stage where the possibilities have barely begun to develop so our vision of Pocket Journey is just one direction of many that will be taken. The concept of combining LAC with an online community isn’t new either, and the competitive field is already being drawn in this space. We eagerly look forward to this substantial merging of the online & the offline (“real”) world.
Getting Involved in Pocket Journey
First let us thank everyone that helped make this first phase of Pocket Journey possible! We’d never be here with the alpha release about to launch without your participation and feedback. For newcomers, the alpha release of Pocket Journey is nearing completion so we are not accepting any new members. We are currently building a team with the right combination of business vision and product development know-how to execute what we believe is the most viable go-to-market strategy around geo-tagging of content. If you are interested in discussing the future of location-aware content then please leave your thoughts below.
Thank you,
The Pocket Journey Team
